FMIT Alert Level 1: Hurricane Irma Weakens Slightly Over The Last 24 Hours With Maximum Sustained Winds Now at 110mph. 9-1-17

FMIT Alert Level 1
Low

Hurricane Irma Weakens Slightly Over The Last 24 Hours With Maximum Sustained Winds Now at 110mph. Strengthening Projected Over The Weekend as Irma Enters Warmer Waters.

Latest from National Hurricane Center:

“Hurricane Irma is centered near 18.5N 37.8W at 01/1500 UTC or  about 750 nm west-northwest of the Cabo Verde Islands, moving  west-northwest at 11 kt. Estimated minimum central pressure is  972 mb. Maximum sustained wind speed remains at 95 kt with gusts  to 115 kt. Numerous moderate and scattered strong convection is  observed from 16N-21N between 36W-41W.”

FMIT Discussion:

  • Irma has weakened slightly over the last day to maximum sustained winds of 110mph after encountering wind shear and cooler waters.
  • Strengthening is expected once Irma begins to take a west-southwest turn into warmer waters.
  • Models currently show Irma strengthening into a Major Hurricane over the weekend.
  • Irma may approach the Leeward Islands by the middle of next week, however at this point in time it still remains too soon to speculate on eventual potential Florida impact.

FMIT Member Preparedness Actions:

  • Members should continue to monitor Hurricane Irma as well as FMIT Alerts and local/national weather forecasts.
