FMIT Alert Level 3: Hurricane Irma Remains a Powerful Category 3 Hurricane With Maximum Sustained Winds of 120mph. Current Model Projections Now Predict Greater Chance of Interaction with Florida Into Next Weekend. 9-4-17

FMIT Alert Level 3
Moderate

Hurricane Irma Remains a Powerful Category 3 Hurricane With Maximum Sustained Winds of 120mph. Current Model Projections Now Predict Greater Chance of Interaction with Florida Into Next Weekend.

FMIT Discussion:

  • Model projections shifted significantly to the south and west overnight bringing 7-day path predictions closer to FL. Currently projections greater than 24-48 hours are still not fully reliable, so it could affect anywhere from the Gulf coast of Mexico all the way up to Maine at this time.
  • If tomorrow’s models start stabilizing and continue to predict interaction with FL, Members should plan on contacting their internal Emergency Preparedness Teams in order being planning for beginning emergency preparedness measures.
  • Irma remains a Category 3 Hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 120mph. Further strengthening is expected.
  • Irma will move close to the Leeward Islands and Puerto Rico into midweek, and then near Hispaniola, the Turks and Caicos, Cuba and the Bahamas late week into next weekend.
  • Next weekend into early next week, Irma will turn north and likely impact a portion of the Florida coastline.

FMIT Member Preparedness Actions:

  • Members should continue to monitor Hurricane Irma as well as FMIT Alerts and local/national weather forecasts.
