FMIT Alert Level 1: Irma Strengthens to Category 2 Hurricane With Maximum Sustained Winds of 100mph. 8-31-17

FMIT Alert Level 1
Low

Irma Strengthens to Category 2 Hurricane With Maximum Sustained Winds of 100mph. Too Early to Predict Potential Impact With FL At This Point in Time.

Latest from National Hurricane Center:

“The now Hurricane Irma is centered near 16.9N 33.8W at 31/1500  UTC or about 565 nm west of the Cabo Verde Islands, moving west- northwest at 9 kt. Estimated minimum central pressure is 979 mb.  Maximum sustained wind speed is 85 kt with gusts to 105 kt.  Scattered to numerous moderate convection is observed from 14N- 21N between 30W-40W.”

FMIT Discussion:

  • Irma has rapidly intensified into a Category 2 Hurricane in the Eastern Atlantic with winds of 100mph.
  • Additional strengthening is expected at a slower pace over the next several days despite drier conditions and slightly cooler waters.
  • Irma will head generally west to west-northwest at about 10 mph through Friday, then assume a more west-southwesterly track early next week.
  • Currently, it remains too soon to speculate on eventual potential Florida impact.

FMIT Member Preparedness Actions:

  • Members should continue to monitor Hurricane Irma as well as FMIT Alerts and local/national weather forecasts.
