FMIT Alert Level 2: Hurricane Irma Strengthens to a Category 3 Hurricane With Maximum Sustained Winds of 115. Current Model Projections Predict Slight Chance of Interaction with Florida. 9-3-17

FMIT Alert Level 2
Low-Moderate

Hurricane Irma Strengthens to a Category 3 Hurricane With Maximum Sustained Winds of 115mph. Current Model Projections Predict Slight Chance of Interaction with Florida.

FMIT Discussion:

  • Current models are beginning to show a greater possibility of Irma impacting the Eastern Coast of Florida, however the center of the projected path has it recurving into the Atlantic prior to any landfall in Florida. At this point in time it is too soon to be certain on Irma’s exact path.
  • Members should confirm the contact information of their Emergency Preparedness Teams in order to ensure communications should the need arise later this week to invoke preparedness measures.
  • Irma has strengthened into a Category 3 Hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 115mph.
  • Irma will move close to the Leeward Islands and Puerto Rico by the middle of this week, and then near or north of Hispaniola, the Turks and Caicos and Bahamas late week into next weekend.
  • Wind shear is predicted remain very favorable for development over the next 24 hours.
  • From late Monday onwards, however, upper-level winds out of the northwest will begin creating moderate wind shear which will create less favorable conditions through mid-week.

FMIT Member Preparedness Actions:

  • Members should continue to monitor Hurricane Irma as well as FMIT Alerts and local/national weather forecasts.
